Peak Fifteen was the name designated by British surveyors in the 1830s for what is known today as Mt. Everest, the world’s highest mountain. The British conducted a survey of the Himalaya range from India in the early 1800’s in order to determine the actual height of the larger peaks and ultimately, the highest peak in the range. They knew that whichever Himalayan peak was found to be highest, would also be the highest in the world. Interestingly, they carried out their measurements from India as the kingdoms of Nepal, Bhutan and even Tibet were closed to foreigners at the time, yet they managed to calculate the actual height to within a few feet. Not long after it was determined by the British that Peak Fifteen was the highest mountain in the world, it was renamed Mt Everest in honour of George Everest, the British surveyor general of the time. Mt Everest was not climbed until 1953 and is known as a difficult and very dangerous climb, and as such, has become a symbol for determination, strength and commitment.
